PUBLIC ADVISORY: ENERGY SAFETY REMINDERS

The Department of Energy would like to remind everyone that due to the rainfall and strong winds brought about by Typhoon Ompong, your surroundings and home may have been affected.  We should take extra caution especially during floods.

Here are a few tips that can help you and keep your families safe:

1.Use flashlights – In the event of flooding and power outages especially at night, keep flashlights on hand, with new or fully-charged batteries. Avoid using kerosene fueled lamps because they could bring more harm during emergencies.

2.Secure your appliances – You could protect your appliances by placing them above expected flood levels inside your homes. You can put these appliances in elevated portions within your home before flooding occurs.

3.Secure your home – If you and your family need to evacuate, be sure to turn off your circuit breakers to avoid tripping or grounding your home’s electrical system. This will also minimize the risk of electrocution once power is restored.

4.Go back to your homes, safely – When going back to your home, avoid any electrical lines. Contact your electricity provider to clear the power lines.

5.Take extra care when you clear the outside portion of your home. Make sure to wear safety equipment such as thick rubber gloves and rubber boots when you clear debris outdoors.

6.Be wary of plugged appliances – Moisture inside your electrical appliances is very dangerous and there is a risk of electrocution if you touch appliances that were soaked in water especially if it was left plugged into an electrical socket.

7.Powering up your homes – We strongly recommend to have your homes checked by a licensed electrician after it has been flooded to check the integrity of the electrical system.

8. The heart of your home – The circuit breaker is the (electrical) heart of your home. Have it checked by a licensed electrician to make sure it works properly.

The public’s safety and security is our primary concern. Let us all be vigilant and aware of what is happening in our surroundings.

Flooding may occur in your areas especially during typhoons. Let us all do our part in keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe.
