TAGUIG CITY – The Philippine Industrial Energy Efficiency Project (PIEEP) implemented through the collaboration among the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), United Nations for Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), conducted the first leg of the terminal workshop at the Shangri-La at the Fort yesterday (6 March).
“For more than five years, the PIEEP has tirelessly promoted and paved the way for the implementation of an Energy Management System based on the ISO 50001 Standard in the country. This initiative proves how vital energy efficiency and conservation can be in utilizing our energy resources,” Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said.
In his keynote address, DOE Undersecretary and Project Director Jesus P. Posadas highlighted the significant implementation of the Energy Management System (EnMS) and how it is proven to be energy efficient. He also encouraged the active participation of the public and private sector in achieving the goal of becoming a more energy efficient nation.
The sharing of experiences certified under ISO 50001 as well as the best practices of companies that have implemented EnMS with System Optimization, was underscored by the representatives from CEMEX Philippines, Continental Temic Electronic Inc., Tsong Hsing Electronics Inc., and Steel Asia Manufacturing Corporation.
Anchored on the Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016 and the National Climate Change Action Plan 2011-2028, the PIEEP aims to promote sustainable EnMS and foster energy efficiency best practices within the Philippine industrial setting.
DOE Assistant Secretary Robert B. Uy concluded the event by featuring the Department’s E-Power Mo Campaign that will provide consumers with the latest information and developments on cost-effective energy resources and choices. He further emphasized that this campaign, anchored on Ambisyon 2040, will enable the country to be more globally competitive.
Also present were UNIDO Country Representative Ms. Tonilyn P. Lim, DENR OIC-Director Ms. Lourdes C. Wagan, UNIDO-PIEEP Project Manager Mr. Sanjaya M. Shrestha, and UNIDO-PIEEP National Project Coordinator Mr. Oscarlito C. Malvar.
The Cebu leg of the terminal workshop is scheduled on 20 March.
