(Taguig City). Pursuant to its mandate of monitoring energy resource developers, the Department of Energy (DOE) has directed Semirara Mining & Power Corporation to clarify the concerns raised by the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regarding mining operations.

In a letter dated 12 August 2016 addressed to Semirara Chief Executive Officer Isidro A. Consunji, the DOE ordered the company to explain in writing the collateral issues (e.g., toxic waste, sulfur content, mining overburden, land-grabbing and livelihood) raised by DENR against the mining industry participants, which includes Semirara.

The DOE asked the company to submit reports within 48 hours upon receipt of the letter because their strict compliance to their obligations stated on the Environmental Compliance Certificate is critical to the stability of the coal supply requirements of the country. Semirara supplies 90% of the coal produced in the country, and coal share in the power industry is about 30%.

The DOE assures the public that it is committed to ensure quality, reliable, affordable and the secure supply of energy as well as socially and environmentally compatible energy sources and infrastructures.
