TAGUIG CITY –The Department of Energy (DOE), through its Consumer Welfare and Promotion Office (CWPO), and in partnership with the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP), conducted its first ENEReady information, education and motivation (IEM) campaign for 2019 at the DOE Audio Visual room last Friday (22 March).

The ENEReady program, under the DOE-Gender and Development (GAD), with the theme, “Breaking Gender Stereotypes in the Energy Workforce,” aims to encourage today’s young women to pursue courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and eventually join the country's energy industry. The program is part of Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi's call to encourage the Filipino youth, regardless of gender, to become future energy professionals.

Around 50 Grade 10 students and troop leaders from the GSP councils of Laguna, Batangas City, Lipa City and Isabela, actively participated in the discussions.

Speakers from the DOE Energy Resource Development Bureau and Renewable Energy Management Bureau shared their personal and work experiences to show how women have greatly contributed in the energy sector. The speakers also explained the various functions of the bureaus and technical services, pointing out the technical aspects of energy resource development and renewable energy power plant operations, where women employees are able to perform jobs of their male counterparts.

The session was concluded with a tour of the Energy Research and Testing Laboratory to demonstrate how various lighting devices and appliances are tested to measure their energy efficiency and how processed fuels are tested to determine their compliance with the Philippine National Standards.

This continuing GAD program is part of the DOE-GSP partnership, which was forged through a memorandum of understanding signed on 22 August 2017.
