DOE to Host TED Talk on Nuclear Energy

TAGUIG CITY – The Department of Energy - Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organization (DOE-NEPIO) in coordination with research and policy organization, Environmental Progress (EP), will be hosting a TED Talk on Wednesday (23 January). The talk will feature policy expert and Time Magazine “Hero of the Environment”, EP Founder and President Michael Shellenberger, and his views on “Why We Need Nuclear Energy”.

Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi today said, “We are seeking innovative solutions to make power rates in the Philippines go down. We look forward to hearing Mr. Shellenberger’s position as we ponder the feasibility of bringing nuclear power into the energy mix of the country.”

He also emphasized that the activity would significantly contribute to the nuclear discourse by providing information that would help improve public perception and alleviate concerns surrounding the development of a national nuclear power program, particularly on safety and the environment.

On 10 November 2018, DOE-NEPIO and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review Mission to track progress made by the Philippines in addressing the 19 infrastructure issues needed to establish a full nuclear energy program.

“We adopted a technology neutral approach to break barriers against the attainment of our energy goals. I have high hopes that tomorrow’s TED Talk will fill some gaps and broaden our perspectives on nuclear power even further,” Sec. Cusi said.
