PASAY CITY - The Department of Energy-Renewable Energy Management Bureau (DOE-REMB), in collaboration with Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP), Department of Agriculture, and the Sugar Regulatory Administration, hosted the 7th Annual Bioenergy Week from 25-27 June 2019 at the Philippine International Conventional Center.

The three-day forum provides a platform to discuss the latest global and regional bioenergy trends, policies and technologies between the public and private sectors.

“In support of the government's vision of providing stable and comfortable lives for each and every Filipino, we welcome the opportunity to exchange ideas on the recent developments in bioenergy, and how we could maximize its potential in the Philippine setting to strengthen our energy goals," DOE Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said.

Bioenergy is a type of renewable energy derived from biological materials, such as organic waste or agricultural crops. It plays a vital role in the country's energy supply given the biomass resources generated from various crops like rice.

Assistant Secretary Robert B. Uy delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Secretary Cusi, where he emphasized the important role of bioenergy in the agricultural economy of the Philippines. He also underscored that the country has consistently ranked first for environmental sustainability in the World Energy Council's Energy Trilemma Index, which measures the ability of countries to provide sustainable energy through energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability.

Other participants included representatives from local government agencies, members of the government and private sectors from Brazil, US, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and India, as well as various international funding institutions like the International Renewable Energy Agency, International Energy Agency, and the Asian Development Bank.
