Malampaya Gas Field
The most significant discovery made in partnership between Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) and Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) in 1992 under Service Contract 38 (SC 38) is the Malampaya structure located in the deeper part of the Camago-Malampaya trend. With proven reserves of about 2.7 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas reserves and 85 million barrels of condensate, located some 3,000 meters below sea level. The Malampaya Gas Field is the biggest and by far only the second commercial gas discovery in the Philippines to date.
Located 820 meters deep, 80 kms off the coast of Palawan Island, the gas field was commissioned in October 2001 and commercial production of about 400 mmscfpd was in June 2002 to fuel the 2700 MW of gas-fired power plants in Batangas. The Malampaya gas field scheduled to produce 146 billion cubic feet (BCF) of gas per year.
