DOE Commends NPC for Bringing Renewable Power to Remote Sitangkai Communities
The Department of Energy (DOE) commended the National Power Corporation (NPC), under the leadership of President Jericho “Koko” Nograles, for delivering renewable energy solutions to 243 families in the remote coastal sitios of Panggungan, Saluag, and Andulingan in Sitangkai, Tawi Tawi, underscoring the government’s steadfast commitment to reach the country’s farthest island communities.
The 243 solar home systems (SHS) that will benefit around 1,774 household members, were transported to the island beneficiaries on 26 April 2026 through the partnership of NPC, the Sitangkai local government unit, led by Mayor Allan Ahadja and the 2nd Marine Brigade.
“NPC’s initiative shows that no community is too remote to be reached by determined and coordinated government action,” Secretary Sharon S. Garin said. “This is more than the delivery of solar home systems. This is the delivery of dignity, opportunity, and government service to communities that have long waited for dependable power.”
Each 50-watt peak SHS unit can provide electricity for approximately 12 hours and support essential household needs, including LED lighting, mobile phone charging, flashlight use, and basic radio access. The systems will help families shift from gas lamps and small solar lamps to safer, cleaner, and more dependable renewable energy.
Secretary Garin said the project supports the DOE’s broader mandate to advance total electrification and expand clean energy access in missionary, off-grid, and geographically isolated areas.
“In an archipelagic country, electrification is both a development priority and a strategic act of State presence,” she added. “When we bring power to border island communities, we also strengthen resilience, security, and inclusion.”
The DOE also recognized the assistance of the Philippine Marines in helping overcome logistical challenges and ensuring the safe delivery of the SHS units to the beneficiary communities.
NPC will conduct orientation and training for household beneficiaries on the proper use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the SHS units to ensure their long-term use and sustainability.
The DOE reaffirmed its commitment to accelerate electrification efforts across unserved and underserved areas, consistent with the government’s goal of building a more inclusive, secure, and sustainable energy future for all Filipinos. ###
