DOE records major drop in electricity and fuel consumption under stricter conservation measures
The Department of Energy (DOE) recorded sharp reductions in both electricity and fuel consumption following the implementation of its enhanced Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) and Fuel Efficiency measures, generating total estimated savings of P215,151 over two monitoring periods.
Data presented during the 23rd Inter-Agency Energy Efficiency and Conservation Committee (IAEECC) Meeting on March 16, 2026, showed that the DOE’s electricity consumption dropped from 45,010 kWh to 34,540 kWh for March 1–7, 2026 and March 8–14, 2026. This represents a reduction of 10,470 kWh, or 23.26%, equivalent to estimated savings of P144,591 based on an average rate of P13.81 per kWh.
The Department attributed the decline to the implementation of the enhanced Flexible Work Arrangement, alongside the stricter implementation of electricity-saving measures during on-site reporting days.
The DOE likewise posted a significant drop in fuel consumption following the implementation of its fuel efficiency measures. Based on fuel consumption monitoring for March 2–7, 2026 and March 9–14, 2026, total fuel use fell from 2,724.64 liters to 1,841.92 liters, or by 882.72 liters equivalent to 32.40%. The data covered 59 DOE vehicles and translated to estimated savings of P70,560, based on an average diesel price of P80 per liter.
Taken together, the reductions in electricity and fuel use underscore the immediate and measurable gains that can be achieved through disciplined and targeted conservation measures in government operations.
In a message delivered by Undersecretary Mario C. Marasigan during the meeting, Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin emphasized that government institutions must continue to lead by example in promoting energy efficiency and conservation amid ongoing developments in the Middle East, which continue to push global oil prices upward and heighten domestic price pressures.
“Energy efficiency is a national priority. Every step we take to reduce unnecessary consumption and strengthen efficiency helps fortify our country against volatility that may begin beyond our shores but is felt by every Filipino household, commuter, worker, and enterprise,” Secretary Garin said.
She added that practical operational adjustments, such as flexible work arrangements, disciplined vehicle use, and sustained compliance with conservation protocols can deliver immediate and measurable reductions in energy use and costs without compromising public service.
“This adjustment reflects a conscious choice by government agencies to lead by example and remain aligned with our shared responsibility to use energy wisely,” she added.
The Department called on all government agencies to sustain compliance with existing IAEECC resolutions, advisories on electricity and fuel conservation, and related energy efficiency measures as part of continuing whole-of-government efforts to strengthen responsible energy use. ###
