Department of Energy accelerates total electrification through Hybrid Microgrid System Project in Quezon Province
[TAGUIG CITY] — Advancing the Government’s push for total electrification under Republic Act No. 11646, or the Microgrid Systems Act, the Department of Energy (DOE) in partnership with Quezon II Electric Cooperative, Inc. (QUEZELCO II) is set to deliver round-the-clock electricity to Barangay Cabungalunan, Burdeos, Quezon Province through the development of Microgrid System.
Funded under the DOE Locally Funded Project–Total Electrification Program (LFP-TEP) for Fiscal Year 2025, the project carries an Approved Budget for the Contract (ABC) of about PhP 52 million. In its initial phase, the hybrid microgrid will provide 24/7 power supply to at least 214 households, with built-in capacity to expand the services over (20) years, consistent with the long-term electrification objectives of the government.
Acting on the instruction of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to electrify the remaining areas without electricity, the DOE is working closely with stakeholders, including private proponents, to accelerate off-grid electrification through microgrids and other innovative solutions, in line with the country’s total electrification and clean energy targets. The hybrid microgrid system will be a combined 120-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system, a 100-kilowatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and two diesel generator units with a minimum capacity of 50 kilowatts each. Connected to a centralized distribution facility, the microgrid system is capable of parallel operation and maintains efficient performance even if operating at partial load conditions. Awarded under a competitive procurement process, Trademaster Resources Corporation will construct and install the microgrid system be carried out over an 18-month period, with project completion expected by April 2027. The project will deliver a balanced energy mix which is designed to ensure system reliability while significantly reducing dependence on diesel fuel, supporting the DOE’s transition toward cleaner, more resilient power solutions for unserved and underserved areas.
