The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) convened the inaugural Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting under their three-year technical cooperation project to conduct a nationwide inventory of hydropower potential sites, aiming to harness the country’s rivers to power the Philippines’ clean energy future. The JCC is an offshoot of the Records of Discussion for the Project on Resource Inventory of Hydropower Potential Sites signed in June 2025 between the DOE and JICA.

During the meeting, both parties affirmed that the project is a crucial building block for the country’s long-term energy security. By systematically identifying and characterizing hydropower resources across the Philippines, the initiative will provide government and investors with a foundational knowledge on where, how, and at what scale hydropower can be sustainably developed.
