DOE Leads by Example in Government Energy Efficiency,
Maintains ISO 50001 Certification
The Department of Energy (DOE) continues to lead by example in advancing energy efficiency
across government, maintaining its ISO 50001:2018 certification for Energy Management Systems
(EnMS) after achieving a 27 percent reduction in electricity consumption and a 35 percent reduction
in fuel use through the systematic energy management practices implemented across its
operations.
The reductions exceed the Government Energy Management Program’s target of cutting
government electricity and fuel consumption by at least 10 percent, demonstrating how systematic
energy management and conservation measures can translate into measurable results within
government.
The continued certification followed an audit conducted by DQS Certification Philippines, Inc. from
24 to 26 September 2026, covering the DOE’s implementation and continuing improvement of its
EnMS.
“Our experience at the DOE shows what government can achieve when energy efficiency becomes
part of how we operate every day. By leading through our own practices, we hope to encourage
more government institutions to adopt measures that reduce energy use, improve efficiency, and
make better use of public resources,” Secretary Garin said.
ISO 50001:2018 is an international standard for energy management systems that provides
organizations with a systematic framework for managing energy use, improving energy
performance, and identifying opportunities for greater efficiency.
The DOE first achieved its department-wide ISO 50001:2018 certification in December 2023,
becoming the first government agency in the country to obtain the certification for its EnMS on a
department-wide basis.
In 2024, the Department further strengthened its Energy Management Team to institutionalize the
implementation and monitoring of energy efficiency and conservation measures across its
operations.
The reductions in energy consumption were supported by measures ranging from upgrades to
lighting and air-conditioning systems to improved management of service vehicles, alternative work
arrangements, and energy conservation practices among DOE personnel.
The DOE is also preparing its next set of energy management measures, including the installation
of smart meters to improve the monitoring and management of electricity consumption and support
the development of a Building Energy Management System.
The Department also plans to gradually transition its vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.
The DOE is likewise exploring retail electricity supply options as part of efforts to improve the
management of its energy requirements.
The Department will continue to monitor its consumption, identify further efficiency measures, and
apply lessons from its own operations in advancing energy efficiency and conservation across
government.
